EXPLORERS FROM LASPD HONORED

The Explorers, a Post from the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD), was established in May 2003 to acquaint youth with a career in law enforcement and involve them in a positive civic relationship.

At National Philanthropy Day®, held November 15, 2006 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, David Hernandez, Iris Gonzales and Officer Don Norek received the Medallion award on behalf of the LASPD Explorers. The Assistance League of Southern California nominated the Explorers for their exceptional work in the community and assistance to Operation School Bell and OSB on Wheels.

National Philanthropy Day acknowledges the entire spectrum of services provided by the nonprofit community and recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society. Each year, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) honors individuals and groups who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities and the world.

There is no question in our minds that the Explorers should have been the top winners. These young men and women each contribute 10-12 hours every week, assisting Operation School Bell volunteers at our Hollywood facility by restocking and managing inventory, fitting children with shoes and socks aboard "Wheels", transporting merchandise, and generally assisting "as needed" at "Wheels" events and special service days at our Hollywood facility. We were delighted to present them with their Medallions for exceptional work.

For the past four years, the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) has worked closely with the volunteers of Anne Banning Auxiliary to provide special service days to children in need. Each month, LASPD officers bring children from area schools to OSB’s Hollywood facility to receive desperately needed service.
The officers, who are assigned to local schools, work closely with school counselors and faculty to identify children in need and then arrange for the children’s service at Operation School Bell. Through a variety of activities, like escorting the children to our Hollywood facility or taking them to lunch afterwards, the officers develop special relationships with the children, and serve as positive role models and mentors.
